Mark,

Jack's game was played at Plymouth Massachusetts in 1990. I had to avert my eyes during the game, but I remember the post-mortem. Later I sent you the Tarjan game, which I had gotten from Chess Life & Review. The Sjodin and Sjodin-cousin got written up in Chess Chow as well, as I imagine you know. But also check out Graham Burgess's "101 Opening Surprises" [1998], pp.122-123, with decent coverage of the Sjodin. Too bad Burgess named it wrong -- the "Bellon Gambit". Whatever.

I think Bellon invented a horrible gambit in the opening 1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Nf3 e4? 4. Ng5 b5 (it's already too late to save the position) 5. d3! and white has a huge plus. I had the pleasure of demonstrating this ONCE AGAIN at the Marshall CC International 2008 to a local master who had the seedy reputation of playing to mate (which he lived up to, continuing down 2 queens - not very amusing!). Of course in the early 70s it was not known yet and Bellon scored some wins versus inferior 5th moves.

Mark thank you for a great website,

do you have Jack Young's email or icc handle ?

i never met him, but read his funny articles in chess horizons,
would love to know if he will write more about chess in the future?

you might also do a column on why people "quit chess" ?
i can see playing less often or less seriously,
but quit is such a strong word!
implies that chess is an addiction like smoking cigarrettes?
your thoughts

David Janowski had a wealthy patron that permitted him to pursue two addictions, chess and roulette. The latter proved more harmful.
