A lot of people concur with the "Reich position." Let me make an analogy to hopefully illustrate the drawbacks. An amateur basketball tournament is organized (4 on 4 half court). For decades, amateur basketball players loved to get out there and play their imperfect game and battle it out for the unimportant trophy. Then a team shows up with 3 NBA starters and a toddler that they place out of the way 40 feet from the basket. The 3 NBA starters win the event quite easily and the toddler goes home with the trophy. The starters were paid by the toddler's dad. Did this promote basketball or just make a mockery of the event?

How to fix this? By the Competency Criterion: the toddler must be able to sink one free-throw in ten attempts!

If someone wants to give titled players a payday, and class players an opportunity to play them, why complain? There are no money prizes on the line. If I were lucky enough to be on a regional winning team (close 1 year), I would be thrilled to play a GM one on one in the playoffs. The stacked teams help promote chess!

For the sake of simplicity, I just prefer the 1,000-point rule.

Regarding the Barclay Gallery: they also fielded two teams in 1985. Both of them were 5-0 going into the last round. We beat one team and out-tiebreaked the other one (since its 4th board went 0-6). Double whammy!

I like the idea that board 4 has to score a point. Though it needs to be a played game point. Fanning did score a forfeit win. Was that someone who decided it was better to forfeit then waste 10 minutes playing a 5 year old?

If I recall correctly (a rhetorical device, intended to strike a modest note. In fact, I'm absolutely certain), Whitehead beat Rachels in '84 to save a drawn match for the uptown yayo though of course the Kids were the tiebreak champs.
